This has been one hell of a year for weird violent crimes. First, on May 23, Elliot Rodger went on a rampage in Isla Vista, California, killing four young men and two young women, then committing suicide before the police could catch him.

Next, in late May, two 12-year-old girls tried to stab a friend of theirs, also 12 years old, to death, having lured her to a place where they thought they could get away with it. The reason: to take the body to the Wisconsin estate of Slenderman, a fictional horror character, in order to be accepted by Slenderman as his devoted followers.

Next, in July, in Florida, two girls aged 18 and 15 tortured and stomped a gopher tortoise to death, getting it all on film as they did so. They posted the video on Facebook, thinking it would please their friends. Instead, their friends turned them in to the police. When the girls were arrested and were put in the back of police cars to be booked into jail, reportedly they were smiling and smiling, as if at some secret, delightful joke.

Finally, a few days ago (it's now September 9), 14-year-old Lily Marie Hartwell of Port Richey, Florida set her home on fire as her mother and brother slept within, possibly trying to sacrifice them to Slenderman.

What's next? Kindergartners setting their classroom on fire with the teacher locked inside as a sacrifice to Slenderman? A 12-year-old girl trying to assassinate the President of the United States just for a lark? A 4-year-old boy killing his whole family and dragging their bodies to the well and dumping them in there? Someone using a suitcase nuke to blow up a stadium packed with fans of both teams during a game between two favorite teams? A replay of 9/11 on the 13th anniversary thereof, only far, far worse?

Stay tuned for further exciting development, folks. I've a hunch there could be several more this year.

We had a 12-year-old stab a 9-year-old to death locally last month.

That's horrifying! It's also somewhat of the pattern involving the crimes I listed in this post -- an utterly pointless crime, the perpetrator apparently not caring about what's likely to happen to him, the total unpredictability of the crime (the boy had no criminal record, no history of violence, nothing -- save for his statement that he had taken "a pill"). Just what in the world was in that "pill"?
