Of course they do, and in proportion to the length of time encompassed by their memories. Their regrets could include, e.g., a spider's "Damn -- I knew I should have strengthened that section of my web, that ****ing grasshopper tore its way out and took half my web with it!"; a beetle's "Darn it, if I'd taken a left at that grassblade two inches behind me, that sparrow who's bearing down on me would have missed me"; an elephant's "Oh, how I wish I'd gone off with Maury, I wouldn't be in this truck heading for a zoo right now"; and so on and so forth. We think we're so special. We've got a job just like everybody else; ours is heading for the stars and taking everybody else with us. But it's the rank-and-file of the planet who keep the whole thing turning over, keep oxygen in the atmosphere, making nutrients available, without which we wouldn't be here.
