I knew it . . .

Want to know who is promoting the idea that "global warming is a fraud" and giant corporations such as the petroleum companies, producers of GMO crops such as GMO corn and GMO salmon? Look no farther. It's all here. I leave deciding the implications of all this up to the reader, though I will say that ALEC has been pushing ad hominem attacks on scientists who are studying and reporting on global warming because "the science is impeccable, and we can't prove it is wrong, so we'll have to attack the scientists, promoting the idea that they are frauds, instead." I don't care whether you are Left, Right, Sideways, or adherents of the Moebius Strip political group. Your lives and those of any descendants you may have are on the line, and so is that of the biosphere as a whole, on which we all depend on for our very existence. And ALEC is standing directly between you and the truth, and working day and night to keep you blinded to the reality of the decreasing health of the biosphere, the decreasing health of anyone eating GMO "foods", and the huge spikes in developmental disabilties and long-term ailments such as autism, diabetes, psychopathy, ADD, ADHD, and a host of others, not to mention the ongoing chemical castration of the males of countless species, including humanity. Enjoy, folks.

If, as you appear to suggest, our species really can't survive a mere 1-2 degree C elevation in average global temperatures, or live for long periods of time on processed food, then we surely can't journey to or establish viable settlements on other planets, as you've often said is your dream.

Is our species really so vulnerable and weak, or are we bold and strong? Because I assure you, the cosmos will never be the domain of the vulnerable and weak. And if we are bold and strong, what need we fear anything, especially here on our own home planet, to which we are already supremely adapted over thousands of generations, and across multiple ice ages and climate re-warmings?

These are two issues on which you and I part ways. I've seen absolutely no evidence to suggest either

1. that human activity is principally responsible for, or able to reverse, any significant change in Earth's climate;

or

2. that GMO foods are harmful (or, for that matter, anything but HELPful, e.g., able to grow in harsher conditions, with fewer pesticides and fertilizers).

ALEC is a center-right, business-friendly organization that lobbies for its causes and (like all lobbies) offers proposed legislative language. The outfits that reflexively oppose it are hard, hard left wackadoos who go on and on (and on) about THE KOCH BROTHERS!@!!

Whoops, misplaced my comment. That was to the OP, not whitetail.

To find out what's going on with global warming, for real, check out websites such as NASA.org and NOAA.org and check out the data they have accumulated over many years. ALEC said themselves that the science that has determined that global warming is real and serious is impeccable, so attacking it would be futile -- so they now attack the scientists involved in that, calling them frauds and liars, in truly despicable ad hominem attacks. Check out those URLs I give here for more on that.

As for GMOs, you need to read Claire Hope Cummings' Uncertain Peril: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Seeds. She cites all her sources, and makes it clear how you can check those out.

ALEC and other PR-oriented companies are busy attacking the credibility of excellent scientsits who have done an honest and highly competent job of gathering enough data to provide a basis for their theories and conclusions. Frankly, if I were them, I would sue the holy living shit out of ALEC for libel slander, and defamation of character. They have an excellent and provable case, and could easily win their case.

And as for GMOs, again check out Ms. Cummings' book, and follow up the references she gives in the notes. It's your physical health and that of your pancreas, kidneys, liver, heart, and other organs, after all; do what thou Wilt concerning it. But at least get a better idea of what you're eating when you eat GMO products and those that have been sprayed with such compounds such as 2,4D (a major component of Agent Orange), Roundup (a deadly pesticide which is dangerous to humans and other vertebrates, as well), and their close kin. It's your health. If it were mine, I would protect it by arming myself with real intelligence on the matter -- which, of course, I am doing.

Besides, organic food just flat tassstes better! Which I claim on the basis of real experience. Yum!

We can grow what food we need using hydroponics, and cook it in the normal way or eat it raw. We can also take some animals with us for their milk (milk, cheese, cottage cheese, kefir, yogurt, etc.), and not use bovine growth hormone (rBSY) on them. We can keep most passengers aboard in cold sleep.

As for temperatures, the problem isn't the rise in average global temperature, but rather such things as migration away from lower latitudes to higher ones by disease-carrying insects and other creatures we really aren't adapted to live with, local conditions, sea rise, disappearance (under water) of the best farm lands, and so on. Deadly tropical diseases such Ebola will migrate north and south of the tropical regions, and millions or billions could die of them. And so on and on. Whereas in a strongly contained habitat or spaceship with all sorts of technology for freshening the air, hydroponics for restoring oxygen to the air, advanced medical systems, and all the rest, all that can be avoided.

Evolutionary fitness is always, first and foremost, a matter of luck. What is fit now may be absolutely unfit -- a situation in which the organism or species dies/diest out -- within a short time into the future. "Big and strong" -- as seen by whatever biased view any of us has -- today may be cold meat tomorrow. In short, our fitness and the probability of our species' continuance in any situation is contingent on conditions. This is true of any species and all individuals. As for adaptations over thousand of generations and across multiple ice ages and interglacials of our species, that will mean nothing in the context of cold vaccuum, should we be exposed to it.

So the real questions is this: Will we have a greater chance of surviving as individuals and as a species in an off-Earth environment than would be the case on Earth, or is the reverse the case. In the meantime, keep an eye on GMO food and all the lies told by GMO companies to promote their products in the face of the very real medical issues, ecological problems, and other serious problems with them, and, likewise, on actual global warming (see NOAA.org for which) vs. what is claimed about it by groups such as ALEC and the oil companies they represent.
