The Fat Man

5 Stars

"A hard-boiled elf is framed for murder in a North Pole world that plays reinder games for keeps . . ."

1,300-year-old, 2' 3" elf Gumdrop Coal has just been fired from his longtime job as captain of the Coal Patrol. He's mad, and he's not gonna take it. He's one of Santa's original elves, inspired by his boss's vision to bring joy to children on that one, most special day of the year. But somwhere along the way, things began to go bad for Gumcrop. Maybe it was delivering one too many lumps of coal for the Naughty List, or the festering conspiracy against Christmas he finds looming around every corner. Either way, such disillusionment among the elves of Kringle Town is nothing new. Some elves drown their sorrow at the bottom of a bottle of nog. Some get over it. Some become bitter.

Gumdrop Coal wants revenge.

Justice is all Coal knows. So he decides to teach a lesson to parents who can't keep their horrible children from landing on the Naughty list. Then one parent ends up dead, his eye shot out by pellets from a Red Ryder BB gun, and all Kringle Town is buzzing with rumors that Coal did it. So Coal sets out to learn who framed him, and why.

On the way, he barely escapes the vampire plants of the Mistletoe Forest, battles the terrifying Tannenbomb Giant, and somehow survives the wrath of twelve furious drummers, eleven raging pipers. and their equally violent friends. And what he learns could mean the end of Christmas -- and of the Fat Man himself. . . .

Ken Harmon, an award-winning advertising copywriter with a deep, lifelong love of the noir novels of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, is short, with a high-pitched voice, traits that inspired this, his first novel. He lives in North Carolina.

It is. For one thing, it's packed with puns and Christmas-season in-jokes. For another, it's a damned good noir mystery. And the illustrations are fantastic.
